"that women adorn themselves in modest apparel..."  1 Timothy 2:9

1 Timothy 2:9

I thoroughly enjoy Bible study, and finding out meanings of words.  Here is information to help you do your own Bible study on the verse above.  It is only my goal to give you all the information I've collected, so you can make your own decisions about clothing.  Let us women always remember: "submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord" Ephesians 5:22, before we make any decisions on our own.

vs. 9: "In like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest-(kosmios, #2887) apparel-(katastole #2689) with shamefacedness and sobriety, not with braided hair, of gold, or pearls, or costly array.  Vs. 10  But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.

"modest" is the Greek word "kosmios" (kos-mee-os) means: orderly, i.e. decorous:, of good behavior, modest

"apparel" is the Greek word "katastole" (kat-as-tol-ay') defined at:  a deposit, i.e. (spec) costume: apparel.

Katastole was taken from the Greek word "katastello" which means to put down, quell, appease, quiet.

Lets define "kata" #2596; Down (in place or time).  The primary meaning of down, down from, down upon, down in.  With genitive1 used of place indicating motion down from a higher to a lower place.  In composition, "kata" used as a prefix usually implies motion downward.  Often cannot be expressed in English and is then simply intensive2 in effect.

"stole" taken from the word "stello", it means: equipment, i.e.  (spec.) a stole or long-fitting gown (as a mark of dignity): long clothing (garment), (long) robe.

Some common arguments are that God is saying women should only wear dresses, with no exceptions.  Others say that women are to wear dresses most of the time, that it doesn't have to be "legalistic".  Then there are others that say the lord was not commanding women to wear only dresses, but that the emphasis was on the word "modest".  That line of thinking continues that, if the verse said "wear modest jackets"... well, that wouldn't mean that we have to wear only jackets, and can never wear anything else, it means that when we do wear jackets they are to be modest, (proper, decent).  They also say there are other words in the Bible that are a better translation for dress, and if God really wanted us to know that He wanted us ladies wearing dresses full time, he would have used a clearer word.

So, it's up to you and your husband, to decide.  Don't forget the Bible says to "submit to your own husbands in everything"  (Eph 5:22)  I believe that includes how to dress.   We have a wise, and merciful Lord who desires His children to shine for Him in every area of life.  Know why you do what you do, and don't follow the commandments of men.  God Bless!  "But in vain, they do worship Me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men"  Matt. 15:9

1 genitive: designating, of, or in a case, as in Latin, shown by grammatical inflection or by analytical construction and typically expressing possession, source, etc.

2 The word "intensive", as defined by Webster's Dictionary is: adj 1. increasing in degree or amount.  noun 1. anything that intensifies

"intense" 1. occurring or existing in a high degree.

"intensify" to make or become intense or more intense, increase
